Two Cheer-up Cards

As a great lover of Gilbert and Sullivan, I thought that the words from the ‘Tanantara’ Policemen’s chorus in Pirates of Penzance, were apt. I therefore printed a card and sent it round a few friends, one of whom responded by reminding me of a much more appropriate quotation from ‘The Gondoliers’. So I have just printed a second card. If anyone out there would like me to send them a card, please let me know by email.

Limited Edition Hand-Set Letterpress Prints

Using my ‘Cloister’ decorative initials, cast in lead by American Type Founders (ATF now long since gone) and sets of  36pt Monotype decorative initials, I have designed and printed limited editions of special prints that show the beauty of these initials, especially when printed by letterpress, on ‘mould made’ 100% cotton paper.

Due to the time involved in hand-setting and make-ready for each design, coupled to the individual printing process, I have only been able to do around twenty five of each design. Thus, they are all individual and limited prints; letterpress printed on my ‘Arab’ antique press, made in 1900.

The prints are either:

A: Print size 13.25” x 9.5” mounted on an A3 board:  11.75” x 16.5”

B: Print size 13.5” x 6.5” mounted on an A3  board:  11.75” x 16.5”

C: Print size 13.5” x 6.5” mounted on board size:   8.2” x 16.5”

D. Print size 14” x 4.5” mounted on third A3 board:   16.5” x 5.9”

The prints show the ‘mould made’ deckled edge on at least one edge, and some of them show the ‘Somerset’ watermark of the St Cuthberts Mill in Wells, where this special cotton paper is made.

MY HEART’S IN THE HIGHLANDS

This is the latest of my prints, using my special decorative initial lead blocks. The print is on 100% cotton ‘Somerset’ 330gsm paper, with two torn edges, mounted on an A3 1000gsm board suitable for framing directly into an A3 sized frame. The words by Burns, will be a special reminder to those who live or holiday in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

Cloister Initials

I am very lucky to have a set of 72pt Cloister Initials, cast by American Typefounders before they went into liquidation in the 1990s. These letters are the Holy Grail of type, being unobtainable today. Cast from very deep matrix, the printed result, especially on cotton paper, produces an embossed 3-D tactile result, that is quite stunning .

The three large initials are the only Cloister letters I have in 120pt. However, I have the full alphabet in 72pt
The smaller 36pt floral initials were cast from matrices made by Monotype.  For reasons unknown, The design of the letter X was deemed unworthy, and was not cast for this set.  They were therefore not given a named but only assigned a number, 448.
